When Mr. Gulley died, he left instructions to not open the trap door till 1948. When the door was opened they found $ 500, gold nuggets and the property’s deed.
Personally I love this place. Nothing can be or go wrong whatever you may be adding, doing or saying while you are there…
I did not take any pictures of the inside being to busy listening to the guide and a little puzzled about the junk inside. I’ll probably go back in the near future to take pictures of the original version.

A sa mort, M. Gulley laissa l’instruction de ne pas ouvrir une certaine trappe avant 1948. A l’ouverture, on trouva 500 dollars, des pépites d’or et le titre de propriété.
Personnellement, j’aime beaucoup cet endroit. Quoique vous y fassiez, ajoutiez ou disiez, rien de mal ne pourra arriver.
Je n’ai pas encore pris de photos de l’intérieur, trop occupée à écouter la guide et certainement très déçue du tas de bazar à l’intérieur. J’y retournerai très bientôt c’est sûr pour me concentrer sur ce qui est d’origine.

After learning that he had tuberculosis in 1927, Boyce Luther Gulley decided to move to Arizona leaving behind his wife and his daughter in Seattle.He spent the 15 following years building this fascinating place. After his death in 1945, his wife and his daughter Marie-Lou came to live in it. Marie-Lou still lives in the castle.A rather curious place made of auto parts, stones, sand and goat milk, Mexican tiles, petroglyphs… everything Mr Gulley could find to fulfill his imagination and build the castle he had once promised his daughter. A dream come true.

Après avoir appris en 1927 qu’il était atteint de tuberculose, Mr Gulley abandonna sa femme et sa fille et vint habiter en Arizona.Il passa les 15 années suivantes à construire cet endroit foufou. Après sa mort en 1945, sa femme et sa fille vinrent habiter la demeure, Marie-Lou y habite à ce jour.Un château un peu étrange fait de pièces détachées d’auto, de pierres bien sur, de sable et de lait de chèvre, de pétroglyphes… de tout ce que Boyce Luther Gulley pouvait mettre la main dessus pour répondre à son imagination débordante et construire un château promis jadis à sa petite fille. La réalisation d’un rêve.

It is while walking downtown Mesa the other day that I came across a “two horses” sculpture which bore a likeness with one I had photographed in Chandler months ago but bore no author’s name. Three minutes on the net and I got the confirmation that these sculptures were from the same man: William Barnhart.If you want to know more about this sculptor/painter/printmaker, have a look at his website and at the studio that he built himself in Mesa. Quite a piece of art in itself!

En me promenant l’autre jour au centre ville de Mesa je suis tombée sur une statue représentant deux chevaux qui ressemblaient étrangement par le style à une sculpture que j’avais photographiée il y a des mois à Chandler mais qui n’indiquait aucun nom d’auteur. Trois minutes sur le net pour découvrir qu’un seul homme était derrière ces sculptures : William Barnhart.Si vous voulez en savoir plus sur ce sculpteur/peintre et artiste-imprimeur, allez sur son site web. Vous y découvrirez le studio qu’il s’est lui-même construit à Mesa. Un petit chef-d’œuvre en lui-même !
