Say it without flowers

208 1
Chandler,

2009 has been hard for a lot of people and I am wondering what is “a lot” in 2008 compared to what a “lot” will represent in 2009.
KaBloom’s is/was a flower shop close to home. There was a walk-in cooler where I could come in and look. There was Kathy, the local manager, always with a smile and ready to help and put together a bouquet or a wrist corsage, If I was not in the mood for flowers there was always a small gift to choose from, a butterfly on a stick, a handcrafted wooden angel …
KaBloom’s is no more. There are two signs on the door: one from the landlord, the other one from the electric company.
I am really sad today.

Oh Tannenbaum!

Photobucket
Chandler, San Marcos Hotel

Fir trees are on strike
As well as pine needles
They all want to be palm
Cherry or banana trees
Become fruit trees
Fir trees are tired
At the end of the year
Of all the garlands to hold
It makes their back bend
Fir trees have a cold
From living near chimneys
Without fresh air without horizon
Confined inside houses
Fir trees are fed up
With providing shade in the summer
Without being thanked for
And to be cut in winter
Fir trees are looking morose
And are getting sick
A sickness that they cure with perfume
Made with fir sap!
Fir trees have announced
That next New Year
They will be on vacation
The forest will be closed
Fir trees are going to the sunshine
Fir trees are deserting winter
To go get a tan
In a warm place under coconut trees.

Dominique Dimey

C'est la grève des sapins
Des aiguilles des pommes de pin
Ils veulent tous être palmiers
Cerisiers ou bananiers
Devenir arbres fruitiers
Les sapins sont fatigués
A la fin de chaque année
Toutes ces guirlandes à porter
Ca leur donne le dos courbé
Les sapins sont enrhumés
De vivre près des cheminées
Sans air pur sans horizon
Enfermés dans des maisons
Les sapins en ont assez
De faire de l'ombre l'été
Sans être remerciés
Et l'hiver d'être coupés
Les sapins font grise mine
Et attrapent des angines
Qu'il soignent avec du parfum
A la sève de sapin!
Les sapins ont déclaré
Que pour la nouvelle année
Ils se mettront en congé
La forêt sera fermée
Les sapins s'en vont au vert
Les sapins quittent l'hiver
Pour aller se faire bronzer
Au chaud sous les cocotiers !

202

Phoenix,

Would there be someone there
To read my life line,
To blow a few sweet words
To tell me that tomorrow,
Tomorrow was yesterday?

Y aurait -il quelqu’un
pour me tirer les lignes de vie,
Pour me souffler quelques mots doux
Pour me dire que demain,
Demain c’était hier ?

Tumbleweeds

202

Chandler,

Tumbleweeds are Russian thistles, weird bushes formed in a ball which, when dry, break away from their roots and blow in the wind or in movies like in “Once upon a time in the West” Grains came from Russia during the 19th century mixed with wheat grains.

202

Chandler,

This is all to say that the city of Chandler (the only one in the southwest with such a tree) comes up with a huge Christmas tree crafted with these tumbleweeds. The balls are gathered to shape a pine tree which will be then painted and trimmed.

Mendhi body Art painting

196 1

Tempe,

Everyone guessed that Marna practices the art of Mendhi.

Mendhi -the art of henna painting on the body- has been practiced in India, Africa and the Middle East and is traditionally practiced for wedding ceremonies and other rites.
Henna is a plant which is believed to bring love and good fortune. A paste is made from the crushed leaves of the plant, applied to the skin and removed several hours later.

Occupation, skill, profession, job

195
Tempe,

Will you guess Marna’s first profession represented here at the Tempe Festival of the Arts last Friday?
Her second job (not represented on the picture) is a human invention, we exercise it ourselves since birth but we have a tendency to forget about this art over time. Loved by little and big kids alike. Hard to describe without letting the cat out of the bag.

That time of year

Chandler,

The season’s spirit is catching on slowly this year we all know why. Decorations are moving out of boxes to be hanged on doors, walls and trees…
Let’s open our hearts and share tears and laughs and hope for true and healthy “Todays.”

The word SKY

193
Chandler,

What would you like to say about the word « sky/heaven? »

« The sky is the daily bread of the eyes.” Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1843

Did it ever happen to you to spend a day without at least see a little corner of the sky ?

A butterfly in the fall

Photobucket

White Horse Pass, Chandler

In April 1942 in Terezin Paul Friedman, born in Prague, wrote:

The last, the very last,
So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow.
Perhaps if the sun's tears would singagainst a white stone. . . .
Such, such a yellow
Is carried lightly 'way up high.
It went away I'm sure because it wished to
kiss the world good-bye.

For seven weeks I've lived in here,
Penned up inside this ghetto.
But I have found what I love here.
The dandelions call to me
And the white chestnut branches in the court.
Only I never saw another butterfly.

That butterfly was the last one.
Butterflies don't live in here,
in the ghetto.

A poem which should bring so much more to what we come across in everyday’s life.

A lot of worries : since when do birds wait for the red lights to cross the road ?
Is spoiling the earth with our laws a sign of our human madness?

Fall colors - Cottonwood trees -

190 1
Chandler,

Fast growing trees which require quite a bit of water that is why we don’t see them anymore as much around here. Yes once upon a time there was more water around Phoenix.
During spring capsules release a cotton like substance which explain the name of the tree.

The desert

When I walk in the desert
the birds sing very beautifully
When I walk in the desert
the trees wave their branches in the breeze
When I walk in the desert
the tall saguaro wave their arms way up high
When I walk in the desert
the animals stop and look at me as if they were saying
"Welcome to our home"

Tempe, Mill Avenue bridge

Floods do occur in Arizona and when this occurs it’s impossible to cross the Salt River other than by bridge. In the 1870’s people used to cross the river by ferry (a wooden one) secured to a cable stretched across the river.
In 1909 the funds allowed a bridge to be built. But the Ash Avenue bridge was designed for wagons not for automobiles.
In 1931 the Mill Avenue bridge replaced the Ash Ave bridge which was demolished around 1990 due to safety concerns. One part of the bridge remains as an historic artifact.

Town Lake 1/3

184
Tempe,

The Tempe Lake is an artificial lake in the Salt River bed which is usually dry. It was completed in June 1999, covers 220 surface acres and is 2 miles long.
It has a system of eight inflatable dams which can be lowered in the event of flooding so that the water would remain within the river. It’s a place for boaters, kayakers, fishermen and for everyone strolling by.
The new Mill Avenue bridge (northbound) that you see here opened in 1994, it was built to relieve the original bridge from the increasing traffic.
