Sheer elegance

Yesterday it was a barking dog behind a backyard’s gate.

Does anyone know the name of this dog’s breed from the picture? A Vendee Griffon?

It would have been better with the sound…  I am only hoping it won’t take you too long to realize what you are seeing here.

A new adventure around the corner

834
           Chandler, November 2011

We are in transition to relocate to Toulouse, France in January. Of course mixed feeling about this move.
Choices have to be made and inevitable chores to be done, therefore much less time to blog.
I won’t be able to visit your blogs or do much writing for a while but I will continue posting pictures with details, if necessary.

Fauna and flora

           Chandler,Nov.2011

The same day as I photographed sorghum (previous post) receiving water from this canal I was lucky enough to meet a kestrel, the smallest falcon in North America.

Sorghum

829 1
 Chandler, Nov. 2011

I don’t want to write too much about sorghum because I had no clue of what it was before reading about it on the web…
Sorghum is a little bit similar to corn. Worldwide, it is a food grain for humans; in the US it is used as a feed grain for livestock. The grain can be also used for ethanol.
You are welcome to comment …

Chiseled garlic chives (without the bug and without flower) over baked potatoes or over a green salad: a treat!

Big bug

Photobucket
            At home, October 2011

It did not take me long to find a bug at Cergie’s request. in fact I have a bug in my own computer. It will take some time to replace the part that I have to send for replacement. So in between bear with me (+ my notebook)  and with the pictures I will take any other day, mostly in the backyard because I don’t have much time to spend outside the home right now….
Busy busy like this fruit fly. Is it a fruit fly?  There must be a more appropriate name for it. Has anyone a clue?

quiz 2/2

791

First stage of a mud dauber.

1ere étape d’un nid de guêpe maçonne.

792 1
          At home, September 2011

The wasp rolls up patches of mud and rolls up balls with her jaws and front legs that she will spread one after the other to build her nest.

792 2

792 3

Spiders are then captured and brought into the nest to feed the future offspring.
The mud dauber live alone and rarely sting.

792 4

The next day the nest is dry.

Le lendemain le nid est sec.

Following Intermezzo and by curiosity I found the name of the tree around which the hummingbirds were playing: it’s a Moringa oleifera, a native to India. Leaves and seeds being highly nutritional it’s a useful resource for developing countries.

Bees

Photobucket
Phoenix, 2008

Brenda in her last post was hoping her readers would take time to “taste” the work of one of the Poet Laureates – who are in charge for one year of promoting poetry – Brenda provided us with a list to choose from.
Here is part of a poem by Mona Van Duyn, the first woman to be appointed poet laureate of the United States in 1992.

…Searching fingers sort and lay bare, they need
the idea of bees—and yet, under their touch, the craze

for life gets stronger in the squirming, whitish kind.
The men do it. Making a claim on the future, as love
makes a claim on the future, grasping. And I, underhand,
I feel it start, a terrible, lifelong heave
taking direction. Unpleading, the men prod

till all that grubby softness wants to give, to give.”

“A time of bees” 1964 Mona Van Duyn (1921-2004)

Daniel was questioning about the next move: an ant? None is visible in our backyard right now but a couple in my archives so here it is:
