Long ears!

827
At the "Spanish Market" Heard Museum, Nov. 2011 - Pete Ortega, Santa Fe -

Just an excuse to get back to “Jack Rabbit”
Here are the comments by Vincent for those who want to learn more about the value of having “long ears.”
Found on the web this morning:
Many of these rodents have enormous ears; this characteristic shows that these species, most of them nocturnal, have a tendency to favor the hearing factor. The capillaries in the long ears of Jackrabbits allow to release some of the heat from the blood cooling the body temperature. In addition their improved earing makes it easier for them to contact females and though to reproduce in a dispersed population. Vince.

Vince »

"Steel Jam Session"

727 1
                          Phoenix, Desert Botanical Garden, 2011

Ludvic is turning junkyard finds around Phoenix into colorful abstract creations.
I must admit I was not too touched by this exhibit and just realized that I took only pictures of details… I like very much the idea of recycling though.
There are  nicer photographs on the artist’s own site.

"L'air" by Aristide Maillol (1861-1944)

A few facts:
Everything started with Paul Getty (1892-1976)’s private collection.
The actual museum (metal, stone and glass) was designed by Richard Meier and opened in 1997.
The Center is located in the Santa Monica Mountains in Los Angeles.
It displays Western Art including European paintings, manuscripts, drawings, sculptures, furniture, decorative arts and photographs.
Even on a rainy and foggy day it is impressive. Because of the weather we could not visit the garden; it will be for later this year…

Quelques faits :

Progression of Transportation

So here it goes:
The elements are titled “Progression of Transportation" and are “rusted steel images locked into seating walls.” Sculptor: David Brant, 2009.

Sculpteur: David Brant, 2009.

I could not figure out that these were “fins” while photographing the 5th element so you see what you see. A sideways picture could have better rendered the idea of fins I presume.

Trois grandes nageoires.

Hashknife Pony Express 2/2

349 1

349 2

The pony express is part of our natural history and to keep the spirit of the West alive the annual Pony Express has been riding (200 miles starting from Holbrook) to Scottsdale each January for the last 51 years with the slogan “the mail must go through.” The first ride took 26 hours of straight ride.
The mail is delivered to the Scottsdale’s Postmaster in person.
You can still send letters with the “Pony Express.” To find the details of how to, go to the Hashknife Pony Express site.

I did not know anything about the Pony Express before writing this post and I’ll try to make it to the next mail arrival in January of next year and keep you posted.

Hashknife Pony Express 1/2

348 1
Herb Mignery “Passing the legacy” Marshall Way Roundabout, Scottsdale 2008

The statue depicts two riders, one from the past, the other from the present.

It all started in the1880’s with the cattle company known as the Hashknife Outfit based in Hollbrook Az, and remembered more for it’s size than for the cowboys who were sometimes wanted by the law!
Later on, in the winter of 1954 the Navarro County Sheriff organized a search and rescue posse which since performed other services like hunting wanted men or rescue lost children or hunters. . The members (about 65) of the Hashknife Poney Express were expected to furnish their own equipment when called on duty,

*The hashknife was a tool originally used to cut meat for hash fed to the cowboys on a range.

than by the exhibit itself: tenth anniversary of the Museum: ten artists have been invited to be part of the project: humor was the platform.
This piece by Alejandro Diaz stands outside the Museum and probably draws people inside! It is of course a joke; this “naked” artist is nowhere to be found.
No picture allowed inside.
Actually I must admit that Perjovschi's drawings, words and sentences on a huge white wall made a lot of sense.
