Long ears!

827
At the "Spanish Market" Heard Museum, Nov. 2011 - Pete Ortega, Santa Fe -

Just an excuse to get back to “Jack Rabbit”
Here are the comments by Vincent for those who want to learn more about the value of having “long ears.”
Found on the web this morning:
Many of these rodents have enormous ears; this characteristic shows that these species, most of them nocturnal, have a tendency to favor the hearing factor. The capillaries in the long ears of Jackrabbits allow to release some of the heat from the blood cooling the body temperature. In addition their improved earing makes it easier for them to contact females and though to reproduce in a dispersed population. Vince.

Vince »

Not having the proper documentation I can’t give you much about the symbols. Mary Kallestewa is a Zuni and I read that she was influenced by archaeological digs at Hawikku, a Zuni village in New Mexico.

Bear =  healing and strength (arrow pointing right: protection/arrow pointing left: warding of evil)
Lightning arrow = swiftness
Sunface = giver of Life (the rays being representing the four directions)
Fish = purifier

Any other explanations are welcome.

Poisson = purificateur

Toutes autres explications sont les bienvenues.

The Heard Museum is the perfect place to discover the Native cultures and art… downtown Phoenix.

Here in the Nichols Sculpture Garden, an exhibit of artist Retha Walden Gambaro -born in 1917- , a Creek Indian (a Southeast tribe) who grew up in Arizona. She works in stone and transforms her work into bronze.
In my opinion a very spiritual exhibition.

Sorry I am a pretty bad reporter : no « dust storm » image ! Dust storm because despite the word “desert” applying to Phoenix there is no sand over here, only dust.
I went outside our home in the front yard but came back inside pretty quickly. Driving the car is risky, it would damage the motor which would need a cleaning. A cleaning would have been more expensive than a picture…
The little bit of video was taken when I started hearing the noise outside, later it was too dark plus the cloud coming from Phoenix was probably well depleted when arriving over here in the East Valley.
I am sure there will be more coming soon.

"Steel Jam Session"

727 1
                          Phoenix, Desert Botanical Garden, 2011

Ludvic is turning junkyard finds around Phoenix into colorful abstract creations.
I must admit I was not too touched by this exhibit and just realized that I took only pictures of details… I like very much the idea of recycling though.
There are  nicer photographs on the artist’s own site.

Phoenix, December 2009 "When friends meet"

Last December I showed you a few of Allan Houser’s “by night” sculptures here and here as well as a brief summary of his life.
I wanted to go back a couple of times before the end of the exhibit but couldn’t make it.
Here are the pictures of what I saw, by day, last December:

"Scorpion"

The “Walking stick” (Intermezzo) reminded a few of you of Louise Bourgeois and her “Maman” spiders… I agree of course.
I read recently that we were swallowing, without our knowledge, at least two spiders a year, however, I am reassuring you, not as big.

"Her secret is Patience"

499 1
Downtown Phoenix, Civic Space Park, Central Avenue and Taylor Street, 2010

The artist, Janet Echelman, named this floating art piece “Her secret is Patience” after a quote by the American poet philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, who wrote "Adopt the pace of nature; her secret is patience."
Janet Echelman was inspired by the cereus cactus, the saguaro blossom.
The work during construction was unofficially referred to by the nickname "Sky Bloom."

What's going on?

Phoenix, 2009 - Allan Houser -

Today, at home like at the Botanical Garden, there is some serious dusting going on to avoid all possible stress on the first days of the year coming up . In the kitchen a good hot soup is prepared and swallowed to help clear the sinuses.

Mix of tradition and abstraction 2/2

"The corn grinder"
“I’m a Chircahua Apache, and I’ll tell anybody in the world that I am. It’s good to be who you are. My family name Ha-o-zous means ‘pulling roots out of the ground.’ That refers to the practice of returning thanks to the earth whenever we take something from her. The Indians respected the earth and their deep connection to it, and that’s something to be proud of.”
Allan Houser
